Datasource visible through Control Panel, but not in WinSQL

Question: You are using WinSQL on a 64-bit machine? If yes, make sure you invoke the ODBC manager from WinSQL. Click "ODBCMgr" button in the connection Window or "Open ODBC Manager" under File menu.

There are two ODBC managers on a 64-bit machine. One for 32-bit and other for 64-bit. When you use Control Panel to open the manager, you will most likely see the 64-bit version. Therefore, it is important you invoke the manager from WinSQL.

Since WinSQL is a 32-bit program, you can only use a 32-bit driver in WinSQL.

The executable name for ODBC Manager is Odbcad32.exe.
  • The 32-bit version of the Odbcad32.exe file is located in the %systemdrive%\Windows\SysWoW64 folder.
  • The 64-bit version of the Odbcad32.exe file is located in the %systemdrive%\Windows\System32 folder.

I see both 32 and 64 bit data sources in WinSQL, why?

When registry redirection is not enabled, the OS will display both 64-bit and 32-bit datasources regardless of the program. However, WinSQL will only be able to connect to 32-bit drivers. Check here for more information about registry redirection.
